How do you choose the right rug for your space? With so many different styles, sizes, and materials to choose from, selecting the right rug for your space can be daunting. Here are a few tips to make the process less overwhelming.
First Step: Measure Your Space
- Look for oddities in the floor like a vent, outlet, or a wall that jets out just slightly in one spot.
- Lay a bed sheet or blanket on the floor to help visualize your ideal rug size.
- Measure the length and width of the sheet/blanket.
Sizing suggestions: | And why: |
– rugs that are too small for the space | – looks like a postage stamp – doesn’t enhance the room as artwork as it should |
– rugs that are too large | – can make the room feel crowded – swallows the look of the furniture |
– For rugs that go under a table, measure the table and add 3 feet to each measure measurement. | – This allows enough space for chairs to slide out from under the table and still be on the rug. |
Second Step: Find Your Style
Rules for designing a rug space: NONE! Rugs can lay partially or fully under a couch. They can be off centered in the room. Design the space for YOUR taste. What will bring you comfort every time you see it and every time you walk on it?
Each room can have its own personality. So don’t be afraid to mix it up from room to room. Find rugs and colors that compliment each other. They do NOT need to match.
When redesigning the entire space, start with the floor. It’s easier to match paint and furniture colors to the rug than to do the reverse.
Third Step: Start Shopping
Buy the best rug you can afford.
Whether the rug is custom made from special carpet designs, a machine made, or hand-knotted, you want something that will last.
Purchase from a reputable rug dealer.
